Water can be a significant cost for any hospital but generally it is only when a very large bill arrives that we sit up and take note. When this happens it usually means that a big water leak has occurred. However, most water leaks are small and, if not repaired, can get progressively bigger over time. That is why these types of leaks are difficult to identify without analysing water use profiles.
This is what happened in the HSE’s Newcastle Community Hospital in Co. Wicklow. They used an online water metering service to check their background water use. This lead to a series of leaks being detected and once fixed the savings were estimated at €40,000 per annum.
