An “out-of-hours” energy survey was conducted in one hospital in 2010.
Potential savings of €10,000 per annum were identified for this facility with circa. 1000 staff.
The “out-of-hours” energy survey consisted of a review of all the areas of a hospital that were not in use on a Saturday morning, for example offices, week-day clinics, week-day labs, etc.
In each area the energy using equipment was noted, and it was recorded if the equipment was on, off or on stand-by. Equipment covered included lights, heaters, air conditioning systems, computers, computer screens, printers, printer/copiers, medical equipment and laboratory equipment.
Further information about energy use in healthcare is provided by SEAI.
