WHO World Health Day is celebrated on 7th April and each year draws attention to a specific health topic of concern to people all over the world.
One of the six priority areas for action under the HSE Climate Action Strategy is Greener Models of Healthcare.
Some examples of work done in this area include:
- A project on reduction in anaesthetic gas emissions carried out in CUH.
- A green theatre checklist drawn up by the Royal College of Surgeons in conjunction with UK colleagues.
Irish Doctors for the Environment has prepared the following guides for greener models of healthcare:
- Sustainable healthcare introductory guide which covers healthcare waste, anaesthetic gases, pharmaceutical waste & antimicrobial resistance, inhaler prescribing and recycling, sustainable diets, and active transport.
- The green inhaler toolkit which includes a brief pocket guide to being a green prescriber: inhalers; a device choice and technique table; and an evidence-based guide to being a green prescriber: inhalers.
- Climate conversations – a series of podcasts with various health professionals, covering topics related to healthcare and sustainability.
