Ireland’s National Biodiversity week has a list of activities taking place, while the International Day for Biological Diversity, and World Bee Day also coincide with this week.
As part of the National Biodiversity Data Centre’s drive to help biodiversity, organisations can sign up as a supporter of the All Ireland Pollinator Plan, which can include healthcare facilities.
The National Biodiversity Data Centre has practical guides and resources including one for healthcare sites, as well as others which would also be applicable to healthcare facilities:
- Pollinator friendly management of healthcare sites
- Business actions and local community actions to help pollinators and signage
- Top ten ways to help pollinators
- A guide on pollinator friendly grass cutting
- How to Guide – creating meadows in local communities and gardens – how to transform grassy areas into semi-natural grassland
The HSE Sustainable Infrastructure office has green space projects on 15 pilot sites to maximise health & wellbeing benefits for patients and staff, and improve biodiversity.
Irish healthcare facilities are taking action to promote biodiversity, along with green spaces for physical and mental wellbeing. Some examples are as follows:
- Mayo University Hospital is drawing up a biodiversity plan for their campus.
- Sligo University Hospital’s herb garden project for renal patients
The National Biodiversity Data Centre has a number of other campaigns to help biodiversity:
- ‘No mow May’, a campaign run across May to help pollinators.
- A campaign for World Bee Day, 20th May.
