The Green Healthcare Programme has produced a Case Study outlining the good practice measures in relation to healthcare risk waste (HCRW) implemented by St. Vincent’s Private Hospital (SVPH). The Case Study focuses mainly on Clinical Waste Reduction in Isolation Rooms and other areas of the hospital and provides essential information on best practice for acute hospitals in Ireland.

St. Vincent’s Private Hospital (SVPH) is a 232 in-patient bed acute hospital providing a wide range of oncology, diagnostic imaging and surgical and medical services. SVPH joined the Green Healthcare Programme (GHCP) in late 2011 with work undertaken in early 2012. The hospital has actively implemented improvements recommended by the programme team.

The main three HCRW waste management good practice activities outlined are:

▪    Removal of clinical waste bins from all publicly accessible areas and most isolation rooms
▪    A review of clinical waste classification procedure for waste from isolation rooms
▪    Low stock levels in isolation rooms.

On average, SVPH produces less than half the average weight of healthcare risk waste of those surveyed by the Green Healthcare Programme, (0.91kg compared to the average of 1.92kg per bed day), resulting in savings of €58,000 per annum for SVPH.
